What is Brute Board Stair Defender?
The Brute Board Stair Defender is built tough for New Zealand construction sites. It’s a 5mm thick protection board that’s pre-bent at 90 degrees to fit stairs perfectly – covering the tread, riser, and nose edge all in one go.
We make it from the same heavy-duty material as our regular Brute Board, so you know it can handle the punishment. The felt backing means it won’t scratch your stairs, and the textured surface stops people slipping even when it gets wet or muddy.
Why Use Brute Board Stair Defender?
At 5mm thick, it can handle dropped tools, heavy boots, and equipment wheels without letting damage through to your stairs. The felt backing means it won’t scratch surfaces. Fits stairs properly. We bend it at 90 degrees before it leaves our factory, so it sits flush on stairs without gaps. One piece covers the whole step – tread, riser, and nose. Stays put and stays safe. The textured surface stops people slipping, even when it’s wet. It won’t fall apart in the rain or fade in the sun for at least 12 months.

How thick is the Brute Board Stair Defender?
Our Stair Defender is 5mm thick with a 1500gsm material weight, providing genuine impact protection rather than just a barrier layer. This substantial thickness ensures reliable protection against drops, impacts, and heavy foot traffic.
Will the felt backing damage my stairs?
No – the bonded felt backing is specifically designed to prevent surface damage. It provides cushioning and prevents scratches, making it safe for use on polished concrete, timber, stone, and other finished surfaces.
How long can I leave the Stair Defender in place?
The product has 12-month UV stability for outdoor use. For indoor applications, it can remain in place throughout typical construction phases. However, we recommend removal and cleaning every 3-6 months for optimal reusability.
Do I need special tools to install the Stair Defender?
No special tools required. You’ll need appropriate tape or temporary fasteners suitable for your stair surface. The pre-bent design means no on-site forming or cutting is necessary.
Can the Stair Defender be used on curved or non-standard stairs?
The rigid 90-degree design works best with standard rectangular stair profiles. For curved or unusual stair shapes, our flat Brute Board can be custom-cut and formed on-site.
What’s the maximum weight load the Stair Defender can handle?
The product is designed for normal construction traffic including workers with equipment. It easily handles standard foot traffic, hand trucks, and typical construction materials transport.
Can I cut the Stair Defender to fit smaller areas?
Yes, the material can be cut with a sharp utility knife or saw. However, cutting may affect the structural integrity of the bend, so we recommend using full sheets where possible.
Is this more cost-effective than replacing damaged stairs?
Absolutely. Stair repair or replacement costs typically range from $200-2000+ per stair depending on material and finish. Our Stair Defender costs a fraction of this and prevents damage entirely.
Can I use regular Brute Board instead?
You could use flat Brute Board, but you’d need to form the 90-degree angle yourself and it won’t provide the same seamless protection. The Stair Defender’s pre-bent design ensures proper coverage and professional appearance.
How does this protect better than carpet protection or plastic sheeting?
Unlike carpet protection or plastic sheeting, the Stair Defender provides genuine impact protection with its 5mm thickness. It also stays in place better due to the anti-slip surface and doesn’t create trip hazards like loose sheeting.
Is the Stair Defender environmentally friendly?
Yes – the product is fully reusable for multiple projects, reducing waste. The polypropylene material is recyclable at end-of-life, and the felt backing is made from recycled materials.
Can it be used in wet conditions?
The Stair Defender is fully waterproof and can be used in damp conditions. The anti-slip surface actually performs well in wet conditions, maintaining traction for safety.
What temperature range can it handle?
The product performs well in typical New Zealand construction conditions (-10°C to +60°C). Extreme temperatures may affect flexibility but won’t compromise protection performance.
